The objective of recent study was to investigate how the complex onsets in Khmer loanwords
in Thai were simplified. The data of the study were collected from the previous studies on
Khmer loanwords in Thai. Only the words contained with complex onsets in the sequence of stop
and obstruent (stop_obs) were selected and they are still in use in the present Thai. The result of the
study was found that 27 complex onsets in the sequence of stop & obs were attested with Khmer
loanwords in Thai and they were simplified. The strategies of simplification were segment deletion,
segment insertion or featural change. Thai grammar prefers the segment insertion, by /a/ epenthesis,
to the featural change and the segment deletion. The unaspirated stops in the first position, from
the featural change, surfaced as aspirated stop in some words. The solving by segment deletion
was not popular to Thai grammar. Most of complex onsets were not systematically simplified. The
complex onset pd, for example, had surfaced as many alternated form, pha-d, pra-d, or ra-d. The
findings could help language learners find their way to understand Khmer language, especially in
pronunciation of Khmer words.
บทความนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายในการนำเสนอการศึกษาประเด็น “การปรับเปลี่ยนของพยัญชนะควบกลํ้าในรูปแบบ
พยัญชนะเสียงหยุดกับพยัญชนะเสียงอ็อบสตรูอันต์ ในคำยืมภาษาเขมรในภาษาไทย” โดยศึกษาจากข้อมูลคำควบกลํ้า
ภาษาเขมรที่ใช้ในภาษาไทยที่มีผู้ได้รวบรวมไว้เป็นผลงานวิชาการในช่วงระยะเวลาที่ผ่านมา และเป็นคำศัพท์ที่ยังใช้ใน
ภาษาไทยปัจจุบัน ผลการศึกษาพบว่า พยัญชนะควบกลํ้าในรูปแบบพยัญชนะเสียงหยุดกับพยัญชนะ เสียงอ็อบสตรูอันต์
จำนวน 27 คู่ ได้ถูกยืมเข้ามาในภาษาไทย และได้เกิดการปรับเปลี่ยนเป็นจากคำเดิมที่ใช้ในภาษาเขมร โดยกระบวนการ
ในการปรับเปลี่ยนที่ปรากฏคือ การแทรกหน่วยเสียงสระ a การปรับเปลี่ยนลักษณะเด่นจำแนก และการลบหน่วยเสียง
พยัญชนะสิถิลในตำแหน่งแรกของควบกลํ้าได้ปรับเป็นพยัญชนะธนิตในบางคำ ลักษณะการปรับเปลี่ยนที่มักจะไม่ค่อยพบในไวยากรณ์ภาษาไทยคือ การลบหน่วยเสียง ลักษณะการปรับเปลี่ยนพยัญชนะควบกลํ้าในแต่ละคำนั้นเกิดขึ้นได้
หลายรูปแบบไม่ได้เป็นระบบตายตัว กล่าวคือ พยัญชนะควบกลํ้าหนึ่งเสียงสามารถปรับเปลี่ยนไปได้หลายเสียง เช่น
การปรับเปลี่ยนเป็นพยัญชนะ pd พบการปรับเปลี่ยนเป็น pha, pra หรือ ra ข้อค้นพบดังกล่าว เป็นประโยชน์อย่าง
ยิ่งต่อการเรียนการสอนคำยืมภาษาเขมรในภาษาไทย และทำให้เข้าใจกระบวนการปรับเปลี่ยนเสียงพยัญชนะควบกลํ้า
ในคำยืมภาษาเขมรในภาษาไทยได้ดียิ่งขึ้น"
