This research aimed 1) to develop
the career curriculum for persons with autism
by using the survey research technique, 2) to
study the results of the teachers’ readiness
preparation to tryout the curriculum by using
the action research technique, and 3) to
study the results of using the basic career
curriculum for persons with autism by the
One Shot case study. The targets included
five responsible teachers in career practice,
six parents of persons with autism and eight
persons with autism in the Research and
Development Centre of Autistic Inclusive
Education Demonstration School, Khon Kean
University. The instruments included a focus
group discussion form, career development
lesson plans, two observation forms for
observing behaviors of the teachers and
persons with autism, two assessment forms
for assessing the ability to work and the
quality assessment of the finished products.
Descriptive statistics such as percentage,
mean, and content analysis were employed.
The research findings of the three phases
were as follows:
In the first phase dealing with the
results of creating the basic career curriculum,
it was found that teachers and parents
of persons with autism needed a career
curriculum for persons with autism in order
to enable them improve their working skills
needed in the jobs, specialists in each career ;
methods, techniques, and materials for
teaching persons with autism to finish their jobs. The developed career curriculum
consisted of 7 jobs as follows : (1) putting
parts of ball-point pens together, (2) beadwork,
(3) putting parts of hairdressing clips together,
(4) making wreaths, (5) packing snacks, (6)
making instant dog’s food, and (7) making
instant cat’s food.
In the second phase dealing with the
results of the teachers’ readiness preparation
in try-out of the career curriculum, it was
found that the action research technique
could help the teachers understand the
curriculum and they could provide learning
activities prescribed in the curriculum.
Teachers changed their behavior in four
aspects : the preparation of the teaching
materials used in learning activities, organizing
the learning activities step by step as
mentioned in task analysis, the use of the
assessment tools, and the appropriate methods
in helping persons with autism.
In the third phase dealing with the
results of using the career curriculum, it was
found that the target persons with autism
had the ranking scores from putting parts of
ball-point pens; beadwork, and hairdressing
clips together respectively and the lowest
ranking scores were of making cat’s food.
