The objectives of this qualitative research were (1) to study h istorical background and
components of the traditional folk song – Chariang Broen; and 2) to study existing characteristics and factors affecting the existence of Chariang Broen. Data were collected through an in-depth interview and a participatory observation. The participants of this study consisted of specialists, practitioners, and general people. The Study findings were presented descriptively. The result showed that ChariangBroen is the folk song of Thai-Khmer people in Surin, Burirum, and Sisaket province. The song has been developed from the former Khmer lyric known as Kan-trop-kai. Chariang Broen consists of 1 male performer, 1 female performer, and 1 Khaen player. The performers improvise in Khmer
language while they are performing. Contents and lyrics of the song are usually connected with the world or religious beliefs. The show of Chariang Broen starts from paying homage and respect to teachers, teacher heralding, self-introducing, telling the importance of a ceremony, asking and answering questions, blessing, and saying goodbye.
The dance patterns depend on Khaen’s rhythm. Performers usually wear the traditional Thai-Khmer dresses. The performing of Chariang Broen could be found in both of auspicious and inauspicious ceremonies. The existent characteristic of Chariang
Broen is the change of performing pattern from singing a miscellaneous song to sing a religious song with a moral depicting. Further, Chariang Broen could be performed in public or private in several occasions. In addition, Chariang Broen has
also been presented through a radio station, a television broadcasting, or making a record. Factors affecting the existence of Chariang Broen consist of an establishment of new Chariang Broean performing group and the club of Chariang Broen which
creates a unity among Chariang Broen performers, an adjustment of performing pattern and story to meet the audiences and hosts’ needs, and training and educating of Chariang Broen to people of the new generation. Those mentioned factors make Chariang Broen to be existed until present. |
