This research aimed to study the concepts of the local wisdom teachers in literature, living
around the Songkhla Lagoon’s areas. For the data collection, the key informants who were born and had
lived in the areas were profoundly interviewed and their literary works were studied. These informants had been praised as being “local wisdom teachers”
or “local scholars” in literature and also regarded
as literary learners, creators and transmitters. The
research findings revealed that there were three
major concepts of the local wisdom teachers which
related to common Thai wisdoms embedded in
their literary works. The first concept showed the
relationship between human beings and nature.
It focused on the influence of nature on human’s
way of life and realized the value of nature. The
second concept was the relationship between
humans and the supernatural beings. It reflected
the beliefs and faith in God and hermit, Buddha,
and ancestral spirits. The last concept was the
relationship between human beings and their
society. It depicted gratitude to the families,
relatives, teachers and obligating people, humans’
reaping what they sow, and the recognition of
their roots. These three major concepts were
inseparable but closely related to one another
and relevant to the communities’ way of life and
the local uniqueness of the South.
