The objectives of research were; to study history, background, and analysis of importance
of International System of Unit and Saǹkhayã in Lanna’s Buddhist literature. A researcher applied the
documentary method, focusing on International System of Unit: SI or Metrology and Lanna’s Buddhist literatures; Saǹkhayãpakãsakapakarana (Text of
Measurement), Saǹkhayãpakãsakaṭĩkã (Definitions
of Measurement), Cakkavãladĩpanĩ (Buddhist
Cosmology), and Jinakãlmalĩpakarana (History of
Buddhism). The findings were that in early time,
the body unit was used for measurement such as
digit, palm, span, cubit, and stature etc. In 1960, SI
was established; 7 base units (Meter: m, Kilogram:
kg, Second: s, Ampere: A, Kelvin: K, Mole: mol, and
Candela: cd), derived unit, and supplementary
unit. Saǹkhayã, the act or process of measuring
in Buddhism, there are 6 types in Saǹkhayãpakãsakapakarana;
1) distance measurement, 2)
agricultural produce measurement, 3) balancing,
4) system of number 5) cost and currency, and
6) monetary money. Other Saǹkhayã is classified
into 2 types in Pali grammar; cardinal number and
ordinal number, 5 types of Padavicãna; 1) adding,
2) multiplication, 3) wordings, 4) symbols, and 5)
multifarious. Saǹkhayã found in Cakkavãladĩpanĩ
included measuring of distance and space between
components of universe and other. Saǹkhayã
found in Jinakãlmalĩpakarana included measuring
of time. There are many differences of Saǹkhayã
and SI concepts such as units of measurement,
instruments and definitions. Saǹkhayã in Buddhism
focuses on abstract dimension, internal measurement
(mind). SI focuses on tangible dimension,
external measurement. SI has influenced Buddhism
to confirm that the truth of Dhamma is a science
by objective being, and Saǹkhayã is found to
have historical value, social value, and Buddhist
literature value as evidences, number, currency,
measuring, trading, and instruments for understanding
Buddha’s Dhamma.
